Hundreds of millions (and arguably, multiple billions) of VC, PE, and other investment dollars have recently been poured into various companies, technologies, and research related to realizing the promise of sustainable cultured or ''lab-grown'' meat products. Startups and established meat supply chains alike are chasing innovation and looking for an edge in this area. One of the leading challenges faced by the majority of these efforts involves the inability of the leading methods to grow ''dimensional'' or steak-like portions. Current approaches generally focus on growing a specific cell type or types individually and then joining later in a processing step, resulting in a ''hamburger,'' ''patty,'' or ''shredded'' consistency.
Through our IkoNano partnership and access to the extracellular matrix experience gained through customizing our biological scaffolds for various clinical applications (from sub-micron structures to the orthopedic level of structural integrity, including replicating connective tissues), we have a solution to this problem. We are preparing to launch a business to become a B2B supplier of appropriate ''meat'' scaffolds to accelerate and give structure to the leading meat growing partners in this emerging industry.
